Two Singaporean army servicemen will be charged in military court today over the death of fellow serviceman and Mediacorp actor Aloysius Pang, who died after a training exercise in New Zealand in January.
Military Expert Ivan Teo, 35, will face three charges – one for disobedience of general orders and two for causing death by a negligent act. Each offense carries a maximum jail sentence of two years and a possible fine for the latter.
Third Sergeant Hubert Wah, 31, will be charged for causing death by a negligent act as well as a rash act – which carries a maximum jail sentence of five years and a possible fine.
The decision was made by the chief military prosecutor following investigations by the Singapore Armed Forces’ Special Investigation Branch. The police did not have jurisdiction to investigate the incident as it took place overseas.
The 28-year-old actor died after being crushed between the gun barrel and cabin while conducting maintenance work on a Self-Propelled Howitzer during a live firing exercise dubbed Exercise Thunder Warrior.
According to a Committee of Inquiry that was formed to look into the incident, the death was the result of human error by Pang himself and the two servicemen being tried, Channel NewsAsia reported.
