Hit these local businesses that are all about stylish supplies for sustainable living and put together your zero waste kit.

You know by now that we’re making a commitment to cut out the plastic crap, and this goes well beyond #plasticfreejuly. If you’ve been curious about living more consciously and think it’s about time you put together your own little zero waste kit, here’s where we picked up a few of the faves we bring with us everywhere, from reusable cutlery, straws and bags for daily use and plastic-free beauty essentials we take on our travels! Check out the goodies you’re going to want for home too, because sustainable living can be pretty damn stylish too…

The Sustainability Project

If you haven’t stalked The Sustainability Project, better follow this store on Insta, stat. We can’t resist the beautiful glass coffee cups by Sol, the monstera-print beeswax wraps by Sustomi, colourful felted soaps and fabric snack bags and reusable fabric ‘Unpaper Towels’ and facial rounds by Marley’s Monsters. Check out the stainless steel bento boxes by Ever Eco and matching tumblers – the perfect size for your iced coffee or lime juice from the hawker centre. Bonus: The Sustainability Project is now stocking Pong Free – the only natural deodorant we’ve tried that actually works, and it comes in plastic-free packaging!

The adjustable bowl covers by Marley’s Monsters – we’re totally into our cactus print bowl cover, which we’ll use over and over again. Farewell, cling film.

Sisters Angeline and Jacqueline run The Clean Attempt on top of their day jobs, and we’re bowing down to their commitment to create this compact but clever collection of zero-waste goodies. We met this lovely pair at one of their popups, and bought pretty much everything they stock: a microfibre cloth to remove make-up using just water, tooth powder made with bentonite clay, a fantastic solid shampoo and a lotion bar. Check out the Upstanding Toothbrush – the most stylish bamboo toothbrush we’ve seen so far – and beautiful beeswax wraps. Pick up one of the beeswax mending bars while you’re at it so you can keep your wraps in tiptop shape.

The super nourishing lotion bar, which is made in a kueh mold (yes, we like our low-waste beauty goodies to look gorgeous) and comes in a reusable tin that’s perfect for travel.
The Clean Attempt, available at Unpackt, or follow The Clean Attempt on Insta to find their next popup and pick up sweet tips on low-waste living.

You might know Trove of Gaia’s founder, June Fong, as beauty blogger JuneduJour, but we’re particularly loving the work she’s doing with her foray into sustainable lifestyle essentials. There are reusable straws, of course, but have you ever seen one in pink glass? We picked up the perfectly sized stainless steel bento box from one of her pop-up stalls too – if you don’t catch her at a popup, browse the online store for more goodies like lunch and snack bags, handmade soaps, reusable make-up remover pads and a slick, stainless-steel safety razor so you never have to buy a disposable plastic razor again.

Confession: we’ve got a collection of reusable cutlery kits that we take everywhere, but our fave has to be Trove of Gaia’s super lightweight three-piece kits that come in their own box to keep things neat. Bonus points for pastel colours, and the cutlery and chopsticks are made from wheat, so you can take it on a plane with you.

This small but beautiful collection was founded by Amy Ang after a serious illness in the family prompted a lifestyle shift towards toxin-free and eco-friendly alternatives. The LaLa Lokal first caught our attention thanks to its natural lip balm, which comes in a clever cardboard tube and now has a permanent place in our low-waste beauty kit. Another cool buy? The armpit detox powder, which you’ll want if you’ve decided to break up with aluminium-heavy deodorants after years of use. And if you haven’t tried soapberries yet – a completely natural, zero-waste alternative to laundry detergent – you can pick up a trial size pack from The Lala Lokal before making the switch. Nice touch.

Another lovely little online store and popup market regular, Duck Saves Earth has all the usual suspects: handmade soap bars, reusable straws… but you’ll find some unique gems here too. Take the safety razor with bamboo handle, crochet wash cloths and travel soap kit, with slices of face, body and shampoo bars in a tin.

The bamboo toothbrush with holder – love the biodegradable brush, but we might love the neat bamboo case even more for our travel kit!

One of the first to bring reusable bamboo straws to Singapore, Melissa Lam of Bamboo Straw Girl now stocks this zero-waste essential in every size and length you could possibly want, but don’t think her collection stops here. Check out her online store or visit The Green Collective (read about it below) to see her bamboo and stainless-steel thermos, cutlery kits and coconut bowls, which you know you want to fill with spectacular smoothies. She also makes produce bags out of remnant batik fabric, which we use to load up on pasta and noodles at local bulk store The Zero Ways – snap them up when you see these in stock as they sell out quick!

Mel also makes essential oil blends, including a rose and geranium mix she says her mum has been mixing up forever, and is fantastic for using on your hair as well as nourishing your skin. This stuff is amazing.
