Singaporeans likes to join in long queues for almost anything. From Hello Kitty plush toys, A&W re-opening at Jewel, and launch of new Apple iPhones. The latest long queue that Singaporeans have been seen in is the launch of the commemorative $20 note that was released today, to mark the bicentennial celebrations for Singapore this year.
Crowds were seen forming at banks all over Singapore bright and early this morning, just to get their hands on the notes, which was launched by President Halimah Yacob on Wednesday (June 5) to commemorate Singapore’s Bicentennial. Among places where crowd of Singaporeans are seen to get the new note is in Hougang, where hundreds were reportedly seen outside the United Overseas Bank (UOB)’s Hougang MRT branch on Monday morning (June 10).
The new commemorative note features our first president Yusof Ishak on its front and eight other pioneers on the back, the note pays tribute to forebears who laid the foundations for modern Singapore. two million pieces of the notes are made available for public exchange at face value at all nine major retail banks in Singapore. The public is reminded that each person can only exchange up to 20 pieces of the note for transaction. The question is, will everyone manage to get their hands on it, or will we see an inflated sale of the notes online pretty soon?
