The Singapore government will be making a contribution of US$500,000 (S$727,430) to support the World Health Organisation (WHO) in their fight against Covid-19.
Supporting WHO’s efforts to limit human-to-human transmission of virus
On Mar. 23, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Health released a joint statement, saying that they will make this contribution to support the WHO’s Strategic Preparedness and Response Plan (SPRP) for Covid-19, which aims to limit human-to-human transmission of the virus.
This comes in response after appeals made by both the United Nations (UN) and the WHO.
According to the statement, “Singapore is deeply concerned about the growing scale of the Covid-19 outbreak and its enormous public health, social and economic impact, including the loss of many precious lives.”
As such, “Singapore will continue to work closely with the WHO and the UN to explore how best we can contribute to the ongoing efforts.”
PM Lee says Singapore will continue to co-operate with the WHO and the UN
In a Facebook post on Mar. 23, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong thanked WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus and his team for “their tireless efforts in this global crisis.”
He also mentioned that Covid-19 is “a global problem, which no country can deal with alone” and that “Singapore will continue to cooperate with the WHO and the UN to overcome this global pandemic.”
Infected over 380,000 and claimed lives of more than 16,500 people worldwide
According to Worldometer, the virus has claimed the lives of over 16,500 people worldwide, and infected more than 380,000 as of early March 24.
Two people have died from the virus in Singapore, while a total of 509 cases have been reported in the country to date.
