Pandan chiffon cake always a delightful tea time treat.

Still keeping at it! These old school cake shops in Singapore and their legendary cakes have been around for a very, very long time…

There is always room for desserts no matter how stuffed we are, be it ice-cream or MasterChef-worthy cookies or a good old birthday cake. But sometimes, you just want to keep it simple and old school. Think buttercream roses, walnut or a light sponge cake and some cream horns with a good ol’ side of nostalgia.

Lana Cake Shop

The menu is limited, the cakes aren’t fancy-looking, and you have to place your orders at least a week in advance. The sole outlet of Lana Cakes sits pretty in Greenwood Avenue and has been in business for over 50 years. There’s a reason why – her classic chocolate fudge cake is well-loved by generations of Singaporeans and have achieved an almost cult status.

Vicky’s

If you grew up in Singapore, chances are that you’ll know about the neverending debate of whether Lana or Vicky’s have the best chocolate cake. It really is a matter of preference – although personally, we think Vicky’s chocolate fudge cake is more moist and chocolatey than Lana’s, plus there’s quite a bit of selections available at the store as well.

There’s nothing more nostalgic than a sponge cake with hand-piped buttercream roses on it. You’ll find this treasure here at Balmoral Bakery, along with traditional chicken and beef pies, custard puffs, cream horns and rum balls. Fun fact: the store opened the year Singapore gained independence.

Tiong Bahru Galicier Pastry

It’s nyonya cakes and kueh heaven at Tiong Bahru Galicier Pastry. The range includes ondeh-ondeh (bright green glutinous rice balls with a gula melaka centre), Kueh Ambon (honeycomb cake), and Lemper Udang (a sticky rice roll filled with spicy dried shrimp). On top of that there’s some classic pandan cake, assorted chiffon cakes, tarts, cookies and pastries.

Swiss rolls and coffee make for a good tea break! Photography:Rich & Good Cake Shop

The store menu reads like a blast from the past. Old timey favourites like swiss rolls, walnut cakes, Pandan chiffon cake and almond squares are available but the main attraction? The Kaya swiss roll. Unbelievably soft and generous with the filling, these babies are also affordable at $8 a roll.

Ng Kim Lee

Having been in business for more than five decades, Ng Kim Lee still keeps it retro with their tiles and grilles. Find Teochew pastries like egg tarts, sponge cakes, the bakery’s signature butter cakes and tau sar piah (flaky buns with green bean filling), some for less than a dollar per piece.
