We all have that one cai png loving friend, who never stops eating cai png. Never. Regardless of whether it’s breakfast, lunch, dinner, supper, teatime or midnight, you’ll find them gorging themselves on cai png, relishing in pleasure as they do.

“So many varieties of dishes. So cheap. So healthy,” they would invariably exclaim. “The best thing since sliced bread? They obviously never ate cai png before. The gall of that upstart.”

But here’s the thing

Granted, cai png is pretty much the hawker’s interpretation of the ultimate budget meal, what with its wide varieties as well as affordable costs. Yet the fact remains that cai png is not something you should be having every single meal, if at all.

And so, without further ado, here are 5 reasons why you should stop eating cai png..

1. It’s Hardly The Healthiest Option Around

If you plunged into the whole cai png craze because it’s supposedly one of the healthier hawker dishes around, I’m telling you;

You’re dead wrong.

While there are indeed stalls that make an effort to cook up ‘healthier’ options, the general majority of stalls in Singapore don’t care so much about your health.

They care more about profits.

As such, expect oil-laden vegetables that wreak havoc on your waistline, sodium-infused meat that make you thirst real hard and ‘healthy’ steamed egg that has been granted a serious makeover. From the inside.

2. Unknown Caloric Numbers

We all know how weight gain/loss can be attributed to one single aspect:

Caloric numbers.

An excessive intake in calories? Expect some additional inches around your waist belt. Not enough calories? Expect some missing inches around your waist belt.

But here’s the thing. Cai png stalls… those stalls… don’t reveal their caloric numbers. And with the sheer amount of salt, sugar, fats, Chemical X that’s going into their ‘dishes’…

You’ve no idea what you’re truly consuming.

Sure, fitness apps have given us a rough estimate. White rice, 2 veg and 2 meats can be taken as 650 calories in total, while the same minus one meat can be estimated at 500 calories. But then again…

Can you truly be sure that you’re consuming 650 calories? Or are you actually taking enough calories to upset your entire caloric balance for the week?

No one knows, but whether you wish to take that risk… is really entirely up to you.

3. It’s Not That Budget-Friendly

Sure, standard cai png stalls located near rundown office buildings might tend to give you a better bang for your buck, but in all honesty…

How likely are you to actually find one?

Also, we’re talking about standard prices. Add in a drumstick or a fish?

Your expenses have just spiralled. Real high.

And so… here’s some advice. If you frequent cai png stalls because they’re cheap, you might want to switch avenues, especially if you want a filling meal at a budget cost.

“Like what?” you ask. “Cai png’s the cheapest what.”

Well, chicken rice and Nasi Lemak are pretty budget-friendly options if you ask me.

And they probably taste better too.

4. It’s Nutritionally Imbalanced

Let’s face it. Cai Png is nutritionally imbalanced.

Really nutritionally imbalanced.

So on one hand, you’ll get rice. Definitely. You’ll probably also get some veg, because you step one healthy.

That’s quite a lot of carbs, for your information.

Thereafter, you’re probably gonna get some fried chicken because you’re stressed out from work. Loads of fats, little protein. And to round it up you get some steamed egg because it seems healthy.

Seems.

Unbeknownst to you, the egg has probably been interjected with loads of oil. That’s why it tastes so good.

That also mean loads of fats, by the way.

And so you end up with a ton of carbs, loads of fat and minimal protein. Ask any nutritionist wannabe and you’ll get one answer:

It’s nutritionally imbalanced. Definitely.

And before you suggest ‘less rice’, keep in mind that you’re still paying the same amount.

Hardly worth it, really.

5. Dirty Secrets, Including Extra ‘Protein’

According to a Reddit user, cai png stalls aren’t as ‘clean’ as you thought. According to the source, they practice quite a lot of dirty little routines, such as:

  • Scooping more for attractive people
  • Reuse cooked meat for another day
  • Vegetables are washed twice, and even then there might still be insects nestling inside
