Aesthetic treatments have come a long way. Today, we have access to some incredibly high-tech anti-ageing treatments and rejuvenating procedures. Whether it’s Ultherapy for a non-invasive facelift or the best lasers for pigmentation, you’ll find many of these aesthetic treatments available in Singapore. So many, in fact, that knowing which to choose can be tricky. Most of the time, there isn’t a one-size-fits-all option either. That’s why it’s important to find the right dermatologist for your aesthetic needs.
Meeting Dr Yong
Dr Angeline Yong is an experienced dermatologist with over 15 years of medical practice. She spent over a decade at the National Skin Centre (NSC), and has been awarded multiple accolades, including the Eli-Lilly Gold Medal, the Healthcare Humanity Award and NSC patient service gold award. She also set up and led the hair transplantation service in NSC before leaving public service to open her namesake clinic, Angeline Yong Dermatology.
I spoke to Dr Yong right after she’d wrapped up her work for the evening. Her day had been packed with back-to-back consultations and patient procedures, but her energy remained high and she was chatty. That in itself was remarkable to me; I wondered how she kept her eloquence without breaking a sweat, even after a long day of work.
I can see why patients are comfortable with Dr Yong. Her amicable personality, coupled with her expertise in both dermatology and medical aesthetics, are a strong combination. Plastered with plaques and certificates from her years of further postgraduate education and contribution to public service, her office is where she holds all the first consultations.
“Everyone tells me that I’m very generous with my time. I think it’s important as it allows me to devise a suitable plan for each patient based on their lifestyle and desired results,” she says.
Dr Yong uses a cooking analogy to explain her work to me; she likens herself to a chef, with her various aesthetic machines as her ingredients. “Both the machine and the doctor are equally important. You can have access to a premium slab of A5 wagyu, but if you’re a bad cook, the steak will turn out burnt.” That explains why she makes sure to constantly learn and improve as a doctor, on top of keeping updated with the latest innovations and equipment.
A background of research and practice
It’s clear that she’s not one to rest on her laurels. In 2014, Dr Yong received a Health Manpower Development Programme Scholarship to pursue a year-long fellowship at the world-renowned St John’s Institute of Dermatology (London). While there, she trained in Mohs Microscopic Surgery (skin cancer surgery) and cutaneous reconstruction alongside other dermatologic surgery and laser procedures. This was followed by a fellowship at the prestigious Mount Sinai Hospital (New York), and sub-specialty training in hair transplantation, cosmetic and procedural dermatology. In addition, she also pursued a third fellowship at the Seoul National University Hospital and Yonsei Severence Hospital where she had further training in hair transplantation, dermatologic surgery and lasers for Asian skin types.
Armed with a Masters of Public Health in clinical effectiveness from Harvard University, her other areas of research include anti-ageing medicine, skin cancer management and imaging, and hair disorders. She is also an appointed Asia Pacific key opinion leader for various aesthetic dermatology devices, including PicoSure laser and the highly raved about Ultherapy by Merz Aesthetics, which is the only FDA-cleared non-invasive procedure to lift the skin and reduce wrinkles on the neck, under the chin, and on the brow. On top of that, Dr Yong is the first Asia Pacific key opinion leader to receive the new Cynosure Tempsure vitalia to run trials and set protocols ahead of a wider launch.
An exciting launch
Coming up is the official launch of a Profhilo, a game-changing anti-ageing treatment that promises to tighten loose skin while improving hydration and skin texture. According to Dr Yong, this safe and thermally stabilised injectable is “the next big thing after Rejuran”. Made of 100 percent hyaluronic acid, the new-class bio-remodelling injectable isn’t just another skin booster, as it also helps to lift tissues. Profhilo works with your skin tissues to stimulate cell renewal, increase hydration and tighten loose skin on the face, neck and other parts of the body. The best part? Only two sessions, one month apart, are needed for a smoother and more radiant base that lasts up to a year!
As one of the official key opinion leaders of Profhilo in Singapore, Dr Yong has already debuted the product at her clinic ahead of the official Singapore launch slated for later this year, and she will also train doctors on its usage. Get in touch with her if you’d like to know more.
