S’poreans Can Trade Plastic Bottles For Food At Tiong Bahru Market On 15 Sep

Discounts At Tiong Bahru Market To Reduce Plastic Waste

You may have plastic bottles lying around at home from all the times you bought a chilled drink to help quell the heat.

If you’re thinking of throwing them away, consider this.

On 15 Sep, folks from Tiong Bahru Market and the World Wildlife Fund Singapore are running an initiative where Singaporeans can ‘trade-in’ plastic bottles in exchange for food coupons.

Plastic bottles collected will be recycled

The recycling initiative is pretty straightforward — bring along your rinsed plastic bottles and exchange them for $0.50 food vouchers at the WWF booth in the market.

The vouchers can be used to purchase hawker food at the market on the same day.

Each person is allowed to exchange up to 10 bottles under this initiative, which corresponds to $5 worth of food vouchers.

Plastic bottles collected on the day will be recycled.

In addition to trading in your used plastic bottles, you can also bring along a reusable container to receive an additional $1 off your meals.

As most Singaporeans would know, Tiong Bahru is home to countless famous hawkers stall, most notably the rojak and porridge stall.

Props to WWF & Tiong Bahru Market for the initiative

Date:
15 Sep

Son confirms mother’s death after body found in search for missing kayakers

The body found in Terengganu yesterday during the search for two missing Singaporean kayakers has been confirmed to be that of 57-year-old businesswoman Puah Geok Tin.

Posting to his social media accounts at about 2am, Louis Pang bid his mother farewell, saying: “Rest in Peace, Mummy. I love you.”

The 23-year-old added: “Dear Mummy, you’ve led a wonderful and glorious life. You did what you love to do till the very end.

“Now spread your wings and be free.”

The other missing Singaporean, retired lawyer Tan Eng Soon, 62, has yet to be found.

Both were reported missing last Thursday after they drifted away amid strong currents while kayaking with a group of 13 other Singaporeans in the waters around the Endau Islands, situated between the Mersing coastline of Johor state, and popular Tioman Island.

According to reports, Puah’s body was discovered yesterday in the waters off Kemaman, Terengganu, by a local fisherman at about noon.

The discovery came a day after the kayak used by the Singaporean pair was found washed ashore about 150km away near the Kuantan Port in Pahang state.

The kayak also contained items belonging to them, including two wallets containing Singaporean currency, a mobile phone, a Singaporean passport belonging to Tan, a bag of clothes, and an identification card.

Malaysian authorities said yesterday they would expand the air search area from 900 to 1,200 square nautical miles, while the sea search area will be reduced from 600 to 451 square nautical miles, The Straits Times reported. Land search operations cover 60km.
