If you’re into zombie survival-themed pop culture, you might have heard of the wildly popular video game The Last of Us.

Remembering The Last of Us

The action adventure horror game developed by Naughty Dog and released for PlayStation in 2013 received critical acclaim for its graphics, gameplay and plot.

It depicts a post-apocalyptic United States where a majority of the human population are infected by a mutant Cordyceps fungus and transformed into zombies, otherwise known as Infected.

The protagonist, Joel, is tasked with escorting across the country a 14-year-old girl, Ellie, who holds the key to the cure for the virus.

Their aim is to the find a safe haven occupied by survivor rebel militia called the Fireflies.

Not only does the game offer free reign for the player to explore their surroundings and smash in zombie skulls, The Last of Us focuses heavily on the begrudging and eventually heartbreaking relationship between Joel and Ellie, alongside other characters they encounter during their journey.

Not to mention, the visuals are fantastic.

Here are some screenshots of the game and its cutscenes.

Numerous YouTubers such as PewDiePie and Markiplier picked up the game as well, uploading full playthroughs of it online.

HBO live action adaptation

And if playing it (or watching it) made you cry, you can cry once again to a live action version.

Because it was announced that after seven years, that there will be a live action series of The Last of Us.

HBO announced on Mar. 5 that it will be adapting the game.

The writer and creative director of The Last of Us, Neil Druckkman, will be teaming up with Craig Mazin, the creator of award-winning HBO miniseries Chernobyl, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The HBO series will include the events of the original game, but fans can expect additional content from the game’s sequel, The Last of Us Part II, which is set to be released on May 29.

While it is far from certain when the series will be aired, or who will be cast, fans of the game have not ceased their speculations.

Fancasts of Joel and Ellie have popped up, with some wishing for Game of Thrones actor Nikolaj Coster-Waldau and actress Kaitlyn Dever to helm the roles.

Others though, think the rugged Hugh Jackman is a much better fit.

The designs and likeness of Joel and Ellie were actually based off Gerard Butler and Ellen Page.

HBO, please don’t ruin this for the fans.
