Former GE candidate and now socio-political activist and goodwill volunteer Gilbert Goh says that the SDP can finally win a seat at the next GE, with a more calmer Chee Soon Juan and Paul Tambyah. Chee and SDP have been generally known to be very forceful and vocal in their policies and anti PAP speeches.
Dr Chee had also been sued for defamation by then PM Goh and LKY, and lost the lawsuits and was ordered to pay damages of S$300,000 to Mr Goh and S$200,000 to Mr Lee. On 10 February 2006, Dr Chee was declared bankrupt by the High Court after failing to pay the damages owed to Mr Goh and Mr Lee. Dr Chee was only discharged from bankruptcy in Court in November 2012, and subsequently stood as a candidate under the SDP ticket in the 2015 General Election and the 2016 Bukit Batok by-election. He lost both elections.
In an article published on transitioning.org – the support site he runs for unemployed and underemployed Singaporeans, GIlbert indicated that Dr Chee could win the polls since he seems “much calmer” today.
Pointing to the perception in the past that Dr Chee was a “confrontational” politician, Mr Goh wrote that “a much calmer Dr Chee now may have finally find enough support from Singaporeans ready to throw caution to the wind and vote in the veteran politician.”
