The Football Association of Singapore Vice-President, and Senior Minister of State in the Ministry of Law, Edwin Tong, has shown the Singapore public that he either plays fantasy Football Manager game in his many free time, or he does not understand how football works despite being a VP of the highest football office in Singapore. He claimed that Singapore can be set a target of reaching football’s pinnacle tournament, the World Cup by 2034.
Yes, that is just 15 years away, meaning the players expected to carry Singapore football at the top of football chain should already realistically be playing football by now, and is receiving world class coaching from world class coaches. Edwin Tong might also have forgotten about the Goal 2010 project, that Goh Chok Tong proudly announced when he was the PM, where Singapore was expected to reach the World Cup. That went and gone, without Singapore even remotely getting near the Asian Championship, much less a World Cup.
For this new target, Edwin Tong said that Singapore must cultivate an endgame in mind in order to move forward. This is the same Singapore football that has seen no gold medals ever in the SEA Games, where only South East Asian teams take part, or the same Singapore whose own professional league have been won by foreign invited teams in the past four years. Maybe his target should have been for Singapore football to win something first in the local leagues, or the regional Games. That already seems a hard task.
