The national mouthpiece Shin Min published an article speculating that former Workers’ Party (WP) secretary-general Low Thia Khiang may contest in the East Coast GRC. This mirrors a move by WP in GE2011 where Low Thia Khiang bravely led a team to takeover Aljunied GRC.
If Low Thia Khiang were to contest in East Coast GRC, Shin Min cast doubts about Pritam Singh’s ability to hold Aljunied GRC. Shin Min even suggested that Pritam Singh should be moved back to contest in Hougang SMC, the WP stronghold, as it would be untenable for a party Secretary-General to be unelected.
Prominent WP NMPs Daniel Goh and Leon Perera have been seen going on walkabouts around Aljunied with Low Thia Khiang, raising the possibility that both will be candidates in Aljunied GRC. Expert political observer Tan Ern Ser said that Low Thia Khiang’s move to contest East Coast GRC will not affect the chances of losing WP losing Aljunied GRC.
