It is our grand list of shows and movies, even cult classics, worth getting hooked on – some are old, some are new, but all of them are positively incredible. Love, Death & Robots (Netflix)
Black Mirror has competition y’all. I don’t think we’ve ever seen anything like Love, Death & Robots before. It’s an animated anthology of mind-boggling stories that don’t even cross the 30-minute mark – the shortest story is 6 mins and the long one is about 17 mins. It’s wickedly good, unorthodox and often dark. Creators Tim Miller (yeah, the guy who directed Deadpool) and David Fincher have managed to pack unconventional art, superior storytelling and world-building and incredible depth in every single episode, however short. Personal faves? Gee, as hard as it is to choose, I’d say The Witness, A Helping Hand, Three Robots and Shape-Shifters.
Grace and Frankie (Netflix)
Filled with oldies but goodies, Grace and Frankie is a real study in ageing and making the most of your golden years. It explores all aspects of love – platonic, romantic and familial and tackles really important social issues with a healthy dose of self-awareness. And yeah it’s just wildly fascinating diving into the various aspects of suburban American life.
The Expanse (Amazon Prime Video)
Sci-fi lovers and space geeks, drop evrrrrthing and watch all four seasons of this incredible space drama-thriller. It’s layered, complex and beautiful in every way. Imagine this: Our Earth, thousands of years into the future, is now governed by the United Nations. Humanity has gone and colonised pretty much everything in sight (no surprises there) and we’re introduced to three distinct “worlds” – Earth (forever political), Mars (superior-tech giants) and the Belters (working-class folks living in the Asteroid Belt). What starts off as a quest to search for a missing person eventually leads to something far more dangerous and momentous. Is it an epidemic or an alien… you’ll know at the end of S4.
Patriot Act (Netflix)
Two words: Hasan Minhaj. Breaking out from The Daily Show, Hasan – unofficially crowned the king of woke South Asians – finally got his dream series on Netflix. And he’s killing it. Four seasons and counting, he deep dives into political and cultural issues inflicting the world and is ballsy enough to name-and-shame when needed. We love him 3000! If you get your news commentary from the likes of Trevor Noah and John Oliver, the Patriot Act is right up there too.
Russian Doll (Netfix)
Frustrating at first but the minute you’re hooked, you’ll soon realise that Russian Doll is the gift that keeps giving. Nadia, played by the uber crass Natasha Lyonne (when you watch it, you’ll realise that ONLY NATASHA LYONNE can play Nadia) is caught in a crazy f-d up time loop and tries to figure her way out of it.
Aggretsuko (Netflix)
Season 2 of Aggretsuko is on Netflix with possibly the most loveable and relatable character – Retsuko, young accountant. She navigates her way through managing a new subordinate and a blossoming love life, all while fending off unexpected snags and a naggy, overbearing mum. Sound familiar? We might not be fans of death metal but we wouldn’t say no to a good karaoke scream sesh.
Um, Actually (Youtube/Dropout TV)
Gotta hand it to them, College Humor is responsible for some of the funniest stuff on the internet. Chances are you’ve probably already caught one of their clips somewhere on the web. But if you’re a true multi-fannish nerd who loves to correct people (you know who you are), this game show was designed for you and only you. From Star Wars and Harry Potter to D&D and Tolkien, it’s a great show to catch a bunch of nerds correcting each other.
Tiny House Nation (Netflix)
While joining the Tiny House Nation isn’t exactly possible on the Little Red Dot, we’re watching this one for interior design inspo. Like most makeover shows, each episode is standalone. The two renovation experts and hosts, John Weisbarth and Zack Giffin, talk to the clients to discuss their needs, ultimately figuring out ingenious ways to fit them into a dream home no bigger than 500 square feet. Imagine having a studio apartment on wheels – it’s a glamper’s dream.
How to Get Away With Murder (Netflix)
Late to the party but we finally binge-watching this legal drama that dropped in 2014. Can we take a moment or three to appreciate the genius of Viola Davis! That lady can get away with anything. Also, we know now that we’re definitely not cut out to be defence attorneys if this is what’s involved!
Big Little Lies (HBO)
Rich suburban moms drink lots of wine, have complicated relationships and overachieving kids. Also in the mix is a crazy psycho husband who maaaaaybe gets what he deserves, random young chick with a son who moves in the area and is befriended by Queen Bee. Maybe we just like watching this show just to gawk at Zoe Kravitz (omg she is so hot).
